What makes Audio Field-guides different from CDs?
CDs of bird-song are excellent for playing at home or in your car to help you learn the calls of birds. However, they were not designed for use while birding in the field - unlike RememBird’s Audio Field-guides. These differ from CDs in several important respects:
Multiple Tracks per species
RememBird is not limited to 100 tracks as a CD is. This means we can have separate tracks for a bird’s song, call, alarm-call etc. On the British library, for example there are, on average, two named tracks per bird. Compare this with CDs which often have to have two or more species on a single track.
Indexes match the major field-guides
The tracks are indexed alphabetically, following the same naming conventions as the dominant field-guide in each region (e.g. Collins European Guide).
Auto Repeat
The audio tracks automatically repeat after a short delay. They won’t run on into the next track or require you to press pause at the end of the track.
Announcements are not part of the track
Having selected the track you want, it repeats without playing the announcement again.
No more fumbling with lists of tracks
You select the track you want by listening to spoken prompts and “clicking” the play button when you hear the option you want. You can do this without taking your eyes off the bird!
Much more compact than CDs
One memory card, the size of a postage stamp holds the equivalent of several much larger CDs.
Additional Recording Space
Each field-guide is supplied on a memory card that has more capacity than the field-guide needs. Approximately half of the capacity is left free for you to make your own recordings.
Waterproof, compact index booklet
Rather than a paper CD insert, we provide a credit-card sized booklet, printed on plastic so it is waterproof. The back cover includes a pocket to hold the card when not in use.
Play from RememBird or your PC/Mac
You can play tracks from the guides directly from RememBird or, while RememBird is connected to your PC/Mac, from the accompanying computer application (New for 2007).
