Overview:
Compatibility:
Although Secure Digital (SD) cards are often said to be compatible with MMC, unfortunately their thickness varies from 1.5 to 2mm and this means that an MMC card can be used in a device designed with an SD slot but not vice versa. Hence you cannot use SD cards with RememBird. Most are too thick for the socket.
MMC+ cards can be used. MMCmobile cards can also be used - with the extender that comes with them (in fact this is what we ship our audio field-guides on).
LARGE CARDS - CAUTION!
We are aware of at least one make of 2GB card that is not fast enough to keep up with the 320kbps audio rate. Please test any new card at your preferred song recording rate - for at least a 1 minute long recording - before relying on it in the field.
DO NOT share Cards with other devices:
Because RememBird uses proprietary file formats (to allow endless repeats of tracks, for example) you should not share cards between other devices, such as digital cameras, and RememBird. RememBird will overwrite any data on the card.
Capacity:
MMC cards come in capacities from 16MB to 1GB. To determine the volume of recordings you can store on a card, use the following guide:
- An hour of notes recorded at 24kbps occupies 10.8MB
- An hour of bird song recorded at 64kbps occupies 29MB
Card Holder:
Because MMC cards are only the size of a postage stamp, they are easily lost. New cards are usually supplied in a small plastic case. If you buy a card pre-loaded with an Audio Field-guide, we supply it with a credit-card sized booklet that includes a small pocket for the card on the back page.
