RememBird-X

External Microphone Support

A number of birders have asked us if RememBird can be used with their existing directional microphones. Now it can! RememBird-X is a new variant on the original RememBird hardware. Instead of using the microphone in the “nose” of the recorder, it records bird song via an external microphone (not supplied) that plugs into the same jack socket as the earpiece.

This lets you use more directional and higher gain microphones than is physically possible within the small size of the RememBird itself.

Cables

The recorder is provided with a special adapter cable terminating in a 2.5mm jack socket for the (provided) earpiece and a 3.5mm mono jack socket for your microphone.

Compatibility

The recorder provides bias voltage suitable for driving many electret-condenser microphones but is most often used with microphones that are self-powered. In this case, the microphone must include a capacitor making it tolerant of such an external bias voltage. The Sennheiser MKE300 shown here is an example of such a microphone.

Size

The small size of the RememBird means that the entire setup shown above (microphone, leads, earpiece and recorder) will fit inside the carrying bag intended to hold just the microphone!

Functionality

The recorder still supports add-in Audio Field-guides and records spoken notes through its other microphone. Note that the internal “nose” microphone is permanently disabled in favour of the external connection. It is not automatically connected or disconnected when an external microphone is plugged in.
